‘Malaysia’s support for Palestine boosts credibility, no impact on economy’

SHAH ALAM, Oct 24 – Malaysia’s stance in support of a two-state solution for Palestine and Israel has not affected the country’s economy or security, but instead enhanced its international credibility and opened new avenues for cooperation.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the country’s support for the United Nations resolution has also not impacted its trade and investment ties with key international partners, adding that Malaysia is committed to maintaining these partnerships for mutual benefit, regional stability, and the well-being of its people.

He also cited data from the Investment, Trade, and Industry Ministry (MITI) that found no records of additional tariffs, trade restrictions or economic measures imposed on Malaysia due to its stance.

According to Mohamad, trade with main partners, including the United States and several European countries, has remained stable between 2020 and 2024.

“Malaysia’s position on Palestine also enhances the country’s credibility internationally. It has the potential to open new cooperation in energy trade, halal investment, food and technology, which indirectly strengthens Malaysia’s strategic and economic interests,” he said in a written parliamentary reply yesterday.

Mohamad also noted that Malaysia recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Palestine to strengthen trade, investment, and economic cooperation between the two countries.

The minister said Malaysia has always upheld the principle of universal peace and consistently affirmed its support for Palestinians.

“This support is expressed through official statements at the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Asean, Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), G20, BRICS, and other international forums.

“This approach is based on the principles of humanity, universal justice, and adherence to international law.”

Mohamad was responding to a question by Simpang Renggam MP Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad on the impact of Malaysia’s support for the two-state solution on national economy and security.
