KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 9 — The Palestine Embassy in Malaysia said it highly commends and appreciates Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent affirmation that Malaysia will not be used as a transit route for Israel-bound trade.
In a statement, the embassy said Palestine views this position as further evidence of Malaysia’s longstanding support for Palestinians and their legitimate national rights, as well as its commitment to justice, international law, and principles of the United Nations.
“For Palestine, Malaysia’s position comes as no surprise. Malaysia has consistently demonstrated its commitment to the Palestinian cause through its political and diplomatic positions, advocacy in international forums, humanitarian aid and practical action.
“The latest reaffirmation is therefore consistent with Malaysia’s clear and longstanding policy towards Palestine,” it said today.
The embassy said Malaysia’s principled position carries “profound significance” amid Israel’s “genocidal aggressive actions” in the Gaza Strip, the continued expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and escalating settler violence against Palestinians.
“Palestinians deeply value Malaysia’s solidarity and consistent support for their legitimate national rights,” it added.
The embassy said Palestine particularly appreciates Malaysia’s advocacy for an end to Israel’s occupation, its support for Palestinians’ right to self-determination, and the realisation of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine based on borders decided on June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international law and UN resolutions.
The embassy also said Palestine deeply values fraternal relations and bonds of solidarity between Palestinians and Malaysians and expressed gratitude to Malaysia’s leadership and people for their continued support, while looking forward to strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation.
Anwar, in a Facebook post yesterday, thanked the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) for seizing on Friday a container suspected of carrying strategic goods for export to Israel at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas in Johor.
He said the action shows Malaysia’s firmness in ensuring it does not become a transit route for trade that could support or contribute to Israel’s Zionist regime’s atrocities against Palestine and its people.
