Two hockey stadiums in Klang to get RM9m facelift ahead of Sukma 2026

SHAH ALAM, Oct 19 — Nearly RM9 million has been allocated by the Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) to upgrade sports facilities at two key locations in preparation for Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2026.

Klang mayor Dato’ Abd Hamid Hussain said the funds are earmarked for improvements at Pandamaran Hockey Stadium and Padang Sultan Suleiman Hockey Stadium.

“RM6.65 million will be used to upgrade infrastructure, floodlights, and digital scoreboards at Pandamaran Hockey Stadium, while RM2.27 million is allocated for landscaping, recreational facilities, and the installation of floodlights and LED scoreboards at Padang Sultan Suleiman Hockey Stadium.

“For Sukma 2026, Klang will serve as a key venue for several major events. This initiative not only ensures compliance with national-level hosting standards but also strengthens Klang’s image as a regional sports hub and an international-standard training location,” he said.

Abd Hamid said the allocation is sourced from the MBDK Trust Fund, aligning with efforts to leverage mega sporting events as catalysts for local economic development through tourism and services.

Recently, the MBDK 2026 Special Budget Meeting approved total expenditures of RM440 million, comprising RM330 million for operating expenses and RM110 million for development costs.

Selangor is set to hot Sukma 2026 from August 15 to 24 next year, followed by Para Sukma from September 5 to 14. The opening ceremony is slated to be held at Sepang International Circuit (SIC) and the closing ceremony to take place at the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) Stadium.

The upcoming games will feature 474 events across 37 sports, including 30 core sports such as rugby and seven additional sports, including e-sports, cricket, and silambam.

Nine districts and 12 local authorities across the state will serve as hosts, except for track cycling events, which will be held at the National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan.

Beautifying, upkeep royal city

MBDK has allocated RM204 million in its 2026 budget to strengthen four key areas in the royal city.

A total of RM92.78 million will be used for environmental cleanliness and public health, drain maintenance (RM14.95 million), road maintenance (RM55.05 million), and city beautification (RM41.22 million), including parks and landscaping.

Abd Hamid Hussain said MBDK’s budget focuses on expenditures that deliver significant impact to the community, particularly in essential urban infrastructure and maintenance.

“The budget is aligned with MBDK’s mission to make Klang a quality, friendly, progressive, and prosperous royal city that leverages digital technology. It aims to balance material progress with quality of life, positioning Klang as a sustainable, inclusive, and competitive city in the digital era,” he said.

According to Abd Hamid, the 2026 budget totals RM440.9 million, with projected revenue of RM391.8 million, resulting in a deficit of RM49.02 million, which will be covered through MBDK’s cash reserves.

“The 2026 budget is a deficit budget, where expenditure exceeds expected revenue. Total revenue for 2026 is projected at RM391,878,020, an increase of RM10,407,940 or 2.73 per cent, compared to RM381,470,080 in 2025.

“Total expenditure for 2026 is estimated at RM440,903,500, an increase of RM39,578,890, or 9.86 per cent, compared to RM401,324,610 this year.

“Of this amount, RM330,781,600 is allocated for operating expenses, while RM110,121,900 is for development projects,” he stated.

Abd Hamid added that the approved budget also includes allocations to promote a competitive urban economy, adoption of new technologies, healthy lifestyles, community engagement, and the empowerment of cultural and heritage initiatives.
