SHAH ALAM, Oct 17 — To ease traffic congestion in the Klang Valley during the upcoming Asean Summit, the state government has decided to allow its civil servants and the employees of state-linked companies (GLCs) to work from home.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the decision was made to ensure that public services continue to operate smoothly while reducing the travel burden on employees affected by the closure of several major roads in Kuala Lumpur.

“In preparation for the Asean Summit that is scheduled to take place from October 26 to October 28, with the arrival of foreign delegations beginning today, the state government will allow state civil servants and GLC staff to work from home, subject to approval from their respective department heads,” he said in a statement after chairing a State Executive Council meeting today.

Amirudin also encouraged private-sector employers to consider offering similar flexibility to their staff, depending on their company’s systems capability and capacity.

“This is to ensure their well-being and to prevent them from being overly burdened by the traffic congestion during the summit,” he said.

In a statement yesterday, the Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department said six major highways and 25 major roads across the Klang Valley will be gradually diverted in conjunction with the 47th Asean Summit from October 26 to October 28.

The highways affected are the Maju Expressway (MEX), the North-South Expressway (PLUS) from Sungai Buloh to Jalan Duta, the Elite Expressway (KLIA-Putrajaya), the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) from Subang to Jalan Duta, the Guthrie Corridor Expressway (Guthrie), and the KL-Seremban Expressway (Sungai Besi-Kuala Lumpur).

Among the main roads affected are the Putrajaya Ring Road, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Pinang, Persiaran KLCC, Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Parlimen, Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan Imbi, Jalan Damansara, Jalan Istana, and Jalan Kuching.

The closures would be implemented periodically, lasting 30 to 45 minutes each, to facilitate the movement of high-level delegation convoys throughout the summit period.
