BANGKOK, Oct 16 — The current government’s four-month term in office will not affect the timeline set for constitutional amendments as the process falls under the authority of Parliament, said Deputy Prime Minister Borwornsak Uwanno.

Speaking to the press at Government House today, he said concerns raised by some lawmakers that a shorter government term would disrupt the amendment process were unfounded.

“The drafting of a new constitution is the power of Parliament, and the government cannot interfere,” Borwornsak said.

However, he noted that there is one circumstance that could halt the process.

“If a dissolution of Parliament is requested first, then the constitutional amendment process would be halted. But if the draft is already under consideration by the Parliamentary committee and the government changes, Parliament can still proceed,” Borwornsak said.

He added that if Parliament is dissolved and a new government is formed after an election, the constitutional amendment process could continue.

“A new government formed after an election may request Parliament to resume consideration within 60 days,” Borwornsak said.

He stressed that the amendment process would continue to follow the legal framework and procedures set out in the constitution and related laws.

Yesterday, Borwornsak proposed that the Parliament set January 31 next year for the dissolution of the House and March 29 for the general election.

He said that as the current government officially took office on October 1, the House must be dissolved by January 31, 2026, after which a general election must be held within 60 days.
