'RM1.26b for elderly welfare shows govt’s commitment to care economy'

SHAH ALAM, Oct 12 — The RM1.26 billion allocation for the benefit of 180,000 senior citizens under Budget 2026 reflects the federal government’s commitment to strengthening social protection and welfare support for the elderly.

State executive councillor for women empowerment and welfare Anfaal Saari said the allocation would not only ensure the well-being of senior citizens but also boost the care economy and social solidarity.

“This allocation proves the Madani government’s commitment to channelling aid more effectively to those in need.

"Among the new initiatives is the Professional Aged and Youth Nursing (PAYN) programme, which provides professional training for caregivers of the elderly and persons with disabilities, in line with Malaysia’s aspiration to become an ageing-ready nation,” she said when met at a programme here today.

On Friday, when tabling Budget 2026, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the funds will cover allowances, socioeconomic support, and the operation of senior citizen activity centres.

He added that the government will introduce the National Ageing Blueprint 2025–2045 as a comprehensive strategic guide, to be launched at the Asean-level New Frontiers on Care Conference next month.

Commenting on the upcoming 2026 Selangor Budget, Anfaal said the state will maintain its focus on women and individuals with special needs, following the launch of the Yayasan Insan Istimewa Selangor by Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin on August 9.

“The care economy will also be further strengthened through productive ageing or silver economy initiatives, which not only focus on care but also open opportunities for income generation and social participation."

Anfaal added that one of the state's key priorities is to ensure children’s development within the first 1,000 days of birth to support healthy growth and optimal cognitive potential.

“We believe that children who grow up with sufficient nutrition will become healthy, intelligent, and productive citizens,” she said.
