KUALA LANGAT, Oct 11 — Selangor will receive an additional RM890 million under Budget 2026 to continue the Sungai Buloh Phase 2 flood mitigation plan.
State executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim said the funds show the federal government’s concern for Selangor’s efforts to comprehensively strengthen flood mitigation and river management systems.
“Thank you to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the federal management for its consideration in approving this additional allocation of RM890 million to solve flooding in this state.
“The state government constantly monitors the progress of flood mitigation projects in Selangor so we can minimise flood impacts on the people,” he said when met after officiating a World River Day celebration at the Sijangkang Mangrove Swamp Recreational Park here today.
Izham expressed hope that the same commitment would be shown for other flood mitigation projects including the Sungai Langat Phase 2 one in Hulu Langat and Kuala Langat, which needs more resources for more effective river management and flood mitigation.
“Part of the Sungai Langat Phase 2 flood mitigation project hasn’t been completed in Hulu Langat, so it must be expedited to ensure river management and flood mitigation can function overall,” he explained.
Yesterday, when tabling Budget 2026 in Parliament, Anwar announced a RM2.2 billion allocation to continue the implementation of 43 high-priority flood mitigation projects.
RM260 million has also been allocated for landslide prevention and slope maintenance works nationwide, including near federal roads, to lower disaster risks and ensure the safety of public infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Izham said the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) has identified 11 locations for river restoration works as part of efforts to boost community participation in ensuring water resource sustainability.
He said that 48 communities have been registered as Friends of Rivers under Luas, showcasing the people’s high commitment to river care.
“Resotred areas could be made examples for other communities to pursue similar initiatives.
“An example of a successful community effort is this Sijangkan Mangrove Swamp Recreational Park, which used to be a garbage dump, but is now a recreational site,” he added.
He explained that the successful conservation of the site was the result of cooperation between residents, universities, local authorities, and government agencies committed to river care.
Izham also said such community initiatives have been strengthened with the installation of plastic waste traps near rivers to reduce pollution and ensure the cleanliness of river water.
