SINGAPORE, Oct 8 — Malaysian death-row inmate Pannir Selvam Pranthaman, 38, was executed in Singapore today, the republic’s Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) has confirmed.

“The capital sentence of death imposed on Pannir Selvam A/L Pranthaman was carried out on October 8, 2025,” it said in a statement.

Yesterday, the Singapore Court of Appeal dismissed his application for a stay of execution.

CNB said that Pannir was accorded the full due process under the law and was represented by legal counsel during the trial and appeal.

He was convicted by the High Court on May 2, 2017, of importing not less than 51.84g of diamorphine into Singapore on September 3, 2014, and was sentenced to the mandatory death penalty.

Under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1973, the death penalty applies if the amount of diamorphine trafficked exceeds 15g.

Pannir appealed against his conviction and sentence, but the Court of Appeal dismissed his appeal on February 9, 2018.

The CNB added that following the dismissal, he was involved in 11 post-appeal applications, seven of which were joint applications with other prisoners awaiting capital punishment.

“All of these applications have been dismissed or resolved,” it said.

Pannir was granted a stay of execution on two occasions. The first was in May 2019, on the grounds that he intended to challenge the rejection of his clemency petition.

The second stay was granted in February this year, pending the determination of a post-appeal application for a stay of execution, which was subsequently rejected on September 5.

In his final legal bid, he filed an application through his counsel Too Xing Ji on Monday (October 6), seeking a stay of execution.

In a written judgment yesterday, Appellate Division Judge Justice Woo Bih Li said there was no basis to grant the stay and therefore dismissed the application summarily, without the need for an oral hearing, pursuant to Section 60G(8) of the Supreme Court of Judicature Act 1969.

This was the second execution of a Malaysian in the republic within the span of two weeks, following the execution of Datchinamurthy Kataiah on September 25.

Two other Malaysians were also executed for drug-related offences in July this year.
