SHAH ALAM, Oct 3 — The Selangor Select Committee on Competence, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat) will hold a public hearing on October 15 to look into flood mitigation efforts in Klang.
Selcat chairman and Selangor State Legislative Assembly Speaker Lau Weng San said the session, which will be broadcast live on Media Selangor, will be held from 10am to 5pm at the second-floor operations room at Wisma DNS.
“This session will probe into the real cause of recurrent floods in Klang, and assess the Klang Irrigation and Drainage Department’s (JPS) efforts to overcome the issue.
“This public hearing will also touch on the Klang Land and District Office’s role, especially in the aspects of flood aid, management of temporary relief centres, provision of rescue boats, assets and other aspects of disaster preparedness and response,” he said.
Lau was speaking at a special press conference on the public hearing at Wisma DNS there today.
He added that the public hearing was called over a series of floods in Klang this year and feedback tabled during the February state assembly sitting.
“After looking into all aspects, Selcat agreed to organise this public hearing to hold space for residents (in areas under) the Klang Royal City Council’s (MBDK) jurisdiction, who are still traumatised due to recurring floods, to voice their concerns.
“These concerns should be taken seriously and met with integrated action from all relevant agencies,” Lau said.
Among witnesses who will be called to testify at the hearing are the Klang district officer, Klang JPS director, and MBDK representatives.
