KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 29 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has lauded the courageous and coordinated effort of international activists, who are part of the Global Sumud Flotilla delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza, calling it a powerful stand against oppression and a symbol of global solidarity with Palestine.
He said the involvement of people from various nations reflects the shared responsibility of the global community in challenging state-sponsored violence and terrorism, and advocating justice for Palestinians.
“The courageous actions of individuals participating in the flotilla to Gaza signify a powerful stand against oppression and the overwhelming solidarity with the people of Gaza.
“The involvement of international activists, including those from Malaysia, underscores the importance of collective global responsibility,” he said in his keynote speech at the World Social Security Forum 2025 here today.
Present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo, and International Social Security Association president Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed.
Anwar said the ongoing genocide perpetrated by Israel is not just a grave violation of international law, but also undermines global social security and erodes the rights of people to safety, dignity and access to essential services.
He said silence in the face of such atrocities would render international discussions on social security “hollow and inadequate”, calling instead for a discourse that integrates justice and human dignity.
“Malaysia’s consistent condemnation of the Zionist occupation and settler colonialism of Palestine is a testament to our commitment to justice. It transcends national boundaries, reinforcing the idea that solidarity in social movements is essential,” he remarked, adding that effective discourse on world social security must recognise and integrate these realities.
“What we need now is a new vision; one that reflects today’s realities and prepares us for the challenges still ahead,” Anwar said.
The Global Sumud Flotilla’s voyage across the Mediterranean Sea carries food supplies, medicines and a message of peace, urging an end to war and famine, while demanding the opening of a humanitarian corridor into Gaza.
Thirty-four Malaysians are among activists from 45 countries sailing to Gaza to break the Israel-imposed siege on the Palestine enclave, and have faced obstacles and threats, including drone attacks.
