SHAH ALAM, Sept 29 — Selangor’s 12 local authorities have been told to prepare for inclement weather, following early reports from the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) of a possible La Nina phenomenon in Malaysia from year end.
State executive councillor for disaster management Mohd Najwan Halimi said local councils and other technical agencies must ensure maintenance on catchment pools are done soon to prevent clogged drains.
“Local councils must also ensure river and ocean levees and pumps are functional, and trim trees that could fall.
“The Selangor Disaster Management Unit, through the Smart Selangor Operation Centre (SSOC) and District Disaster Operation Centre (DDOC), will continue monitoring weather indicators.
“Both agencies will coordinate action with the Disaster Operation Control Centre to manage floods in the state,” he said at a press conference at the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Building here today.
Najwan added that the monsoon transition phase is set to start on September 30 and last till November, and urged the people to remain vigilant.
“This weather phenomenon could cause flash floods, felled trees, water surges, and damage to weak structures.
“The people are advised to take note of weather forecasts released by MetMalaysia,” Najwan said.
