Fama records RM215m sales as of August, eyes RM330m by year-end

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 26 — The Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) reported RM215 million in sales for the first eight months of 2025, said Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.

He said the number of farmers’ markets has expanded to 229 locations nationwide, with 5,618 entrepreneurs participating.

“Our target for annual sales is RM330 million, and we’ve already achieved 65 per cent of this goal,” he said at the 40th National Farmers’ Market anniversary celebration and the launch of the Precinct 4 Farmers’ Market, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim here today.

Mohamad highlighted that the growth in farmers’ markets is not only due to the efforts of the entrepreneurs but also Fama’s ongoing support through strategic partnerships aimed at increasing market reach and competitiveness.

“Farmers’ markets have proven to be essential in providing affordable food for the public while offering farmers better market access. Over the years, we’ve evolved from the initial stages to a more modernised, innovative platform for local agri-food products,” he said.

The modernisation of farmers’ markets now includes digital platforms, such as the collaboration with Grab through the GrabMart app.

This service, which began in July 2023 with pilot projects in Danau Kota and Taman Melawati, now covers 28 farmers’ markets and four permanent ones in Johor, Selangor, the Federal Territory, and Putrajaya, benefitting 282 entrepreneurs.

Sales through this platform have grown from RM90,000 in 2023 to nearly RM700,000 in 2024, with a goal of reaching RM1.5 million this year.

Mohamad said Fama’s role in modernising farmers’ markets is crucial to supporting food security and alleviating the rising cost of living.

“This initiative ensures a steady supply of essential food and allows consumers to save up to 30 per cent compared to regular market prices,” he said.

He also encouraged Malaysians to make use of available space at home for growing basic crops or rearing small livestock as part of efforts to enhance the nation’s food security.
