PAS rep apologises to Syahredzan over defamatory remarks

SHAH ALAM, Sept 26 — Sungai Ramal state assemblyman Mohd Shafie Ngah has apologised to Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan over a series of defamatory statements made on social media in the lead-up to the 2022 General Election and the 2023 Selangor state election.

The PAS legislator admitted that his remarks, which were posted through his Facebook Live sessions on October 25, 2022, and between July 8 and July 12, 2023, were untrue and baseless.

He also acknowledged that it gave a wrongful impression that Syahredzan was not a devout Muslim and that he endorsed communist ideology.

“I acknowledge that the statements were wholly untrue, unfounded, and entirely without merit.

“I deeply regret making or causing the publication of the statements and fully recognise the harm, distress and reputational damage my actions have caused YB Syahredzan,” Shafie said in a statement today.

He added that the Kuala Lumpur High Court had issued an interim injunction on February 19 last year, restraining him from making similar or further defamatory remarks against Syahredzan.

“In this regard, I hereby fully and unconditionally retract the statements, and give an unconditional and unequivocal undertaking not to make or publish any further defamatory statements, or statements that may be deemed defamatory, against YB Syahredzan in any form or manner,” Shafie said.

He also took full responsibility for his actions and pledged to act with greater caution and integrity in the future.

Meanwhile, Syahredzan said that with the suit's settlement, there should be no more personal disputes between him and Shafie.

"I would like to thank my lawyers, namely Daniel Albert, Nicholas Yap, and Amanda Yap, for their services in this case," he said in a Facebook post.
