Statewide plastic bag ban to be finalised year-end — Exco

PETALING JAYA, Sept 25 — The enforcement of a three-day plastic bag ban across all premises in Selangor is expected to be finalised by the end of this year, said state executive councillor for public health and environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin.

She said the legislation will cover various aspects, including regulations and penalties for non-compliance.

“We are drafting the law to ensure the people of this state follow the ban. At present, I was informed that the draft has been completed in Malay, but it still needs to be finalised in English, which may take another month.

“Following that, we will hold a meeting to finalise the ban. The process is expected to conclude by the end of this year.

“As for the plastic bag charge, the state government has not decided whether to raise it to 50 sen or RM1. We are still studying whether the increase would be burdensome given the high population,” she said.

Jamaliah said this after attending a briefing on the Sungai Kayu Ara flood mitigation project and a handover ceremony for contributions to 27 flood victims from Kampung Chempaka and Kampung Sungai Ara.

Last August, Jamaliah announced that Selangor would enforce a three-day ban on plastic bag usage, from Friday to Sunday, at all premises starting next year.

She said the State Legal Department is in the final review phase of the enforcement legislation, which includes drafting and gazetting new guidelines.
