SHAH ALAM, Sept 25 — Selangor, through Tourism Selangor, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Lenggong Geopark in Perak to boost cooperation in geopark tourism and sustainable development.

The collaboration between Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark (GHLGp) and Lenggong Geopark focuses on knowledge exchange, capacity building and community involvement.

State executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim said the initiative reflects Selangor’s commitment to tourism as an economic driver.

“This collaboration is not just about sharing expertise but also about driving sustainable development that benefits the people.

“With the GHLGp now gazetted as a National Geopark, Selangor has identified 31 geo-sites, of which 20 hold strong tourism potential.

“Our aspiration is clear, to position GHLGp as a Unesco Global Geopark by 2028,” he said in a statement today.

Tourism Selangor CEO Chua Yee Ling said the MoU marks an important step in GHLGp’s journey towards international recognition.

“This partnership will create opportunities in staff exchanges, geo-guide training, academic workshops, seminars and research collaborations,” she added.

Lenggong Geopark, now in its Aspiring Unesco Global Geopark phase following a recent evaluation, offers valuable lessons, she said.

The collaboration also supports Visit Selangor Year 2025, which targets eight million visitors, by showcasing innovative, inclusive and sustainable tourism products.

Through this agreement, both Selangor and Perak hope to pave the way for Gombak-Hulu Langat and Lenggong to join the Unesco Global Geopark network.
