'Lower RON95 price to save Malaysians RM200 monthly'

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 — The implementation of the Budi Madani RON95 (BUDI95) subsidy programme will allow eligible Malaysians to save up to around RM200 per month, says Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.

He said the reduction of RON95 petrol price to RM1.99 per litre reflected the government’s commitment to alleviating the people’s cost of living burden, as aspired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“In the past one to two months, the actual market price of RON95 has been between RM2.60 and RM2.75, so when we buy petrol at the pump, the government has already provided a significant subsidy.

“If the pump price is RM2.60, the people save nearly RM183.00 a month. If it is RM2.75, the savings amount to RM228.00 per month,” he said at a media briefing on BUDI95 yesterday.

On Monday, Anwar announced that the RON95 petrol price would be lowered from RM2.05 to RM1.99 per litre starting September 30 for Malaysians, regardless of income level.

Through BUDI95, Amir Hamzah said the government also stands to save between RM2.5 billion and RM4 billion, depending on fluctuations in global oil prices.

“We cannot predict the exact savings for the government as it depends on global oil prices,” he said.

All Malaysian citizens with a valid driving licence are eligible for the RON95 subsidy, which covers more than 16 million people.

Eligibility can be checked online starting tomorrow via www.budimadani.gov.my, at the BUDI95 Customer Service Centre, or through the Setel and CaltexGO applications after the identity verification process is completed.
