State invites private sector cooperation in creative industry development

SHAH ALAM, Sept 23 — Selangor has identified three main branches of the creative industry with high potential: digital art and multimedia, arts and culture, and arts and heritage.

State executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi said the three branches will be made benchmarks to identify suitable areas for creative hubs.

“For example, arts and culture isn’t just handicraft, but encompasses jobs such as mak andam (traditional beautician) and artists, while arts and heritage could be developed through museums and historic buildings.

“We will map it according to each area’s uniqueness. For instance, in Sabak Bernam, there’s a handicraft industry, and a coffee culture in several other locations,” he said during an engagement session at the Selangor Creative Economy Expo 2025 (SCEE25) today, held at the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) Convention Centre here.

SCEE25 was graced by Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin.

Najwan said the development of the creative economic sector requires comprehensive cooperation from all, including private companies, to strengthen the ecosystem.

“In the United Kingdom, the creative economy community has grown rapidly through corporate cooperations without depending on the government.

“In Selangor, we will guide the industry first, and then slowly give them space to be independent,” he added.

Jointly organised with Selangor Youth Community (SAY), the two-day SCEE25 gathers economic players and marks a new era of Selangor’s creative industry growth.
