Desa Mentari flats to get two new lifts by next June

SHAH ALAM, Sept 17 — Two old lifts at Block 5 of the Desa Mentari flats in PJS 6 will be replaced with a RM1 million allocation from the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT), reported The Star.

Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) Zone 24 councillor Farhan Shah Ridzuan said the decision was made after considering safety compliance, how old the lifts are, and their frequent breakdowns.

“The ministry and MBPJ decided to replace the lifts after observing how often the 20-year-old lifts break down. The new lifts will be better in terms of reliability, safety, energy efficiency and compliance with current standards,” he told the English daily during a site visit yesterday.

Farhan said lift replacement works, which began in July, are to be completed by next June.

He said the scope of work includes installing new electrical components and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, funded by the ministry’s Malaysian Housing Maintenance Fund.

“Lifts are being procured from Japan, and I hope replacement and repairs can be expedited. It is important to have the lifts in working order so it does not disrupt residents’ daily activities,” he said.

Farhan also said the lift supplier will bear maintenance costs for two years after completion, before handing over responsibility to the block’s joint management body.

“Skilled maintenance inspectors will promptly address wear and tear to help prevent breakdowns and extend the lifts’ lifespans.

“We must be proactive in lift care as it is an investment, and we hope residents will take care of the lifts as this will also boost the image of Desa Mentari,” he said.

Block 5 now has three lifts serving more than 600 units and around 2,500 residents, with one lift having been out of service for two months.
