DOHA, Sept 16 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he will meet with United States President Donald Trump at the Asean Summit next month to reiterate Malaysia’s stand on Palestine’s Gaza and Israeli attacks on Qatar.
Anwar said that as Asean chair, Malaysia is committed to bringing the voice of solidarity with Palestine to the regional platform to draw the attention of major world leaders.
“In the meeting with President Trump, we will use the occasion to urge him to understand Malaysia’s clear and firm stance in the pursuit of justice, including for Gaza and Palestine,” he said.
Anwar said this during a press conference with Malaysian media at the Extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit here yesterday.
He had attended the gathering at the invitation of Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, as an immediate response to the Zionist regime’s assault on Doha on September 9.
Anwar said Malaysia’s support for the summit demonstrates the unity of Islamic and Arab nations in condemning Israel’s actions and expressing full solidarity with Qatar.
Earlier, when delivering Malaysia’s National Statement at the Extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit, Anwar urged that severe punitive measures be taken against Israel, which continues to oppress Palestinians and persistently violates international law by attacking other countries.
He also stressed that the world, especially Arab nations, must sever all diplomatic and trade relations with Israel.
He said that while many nations have strongly voiced their positions, mere statements and calls are not sufficient, and must instead be followed up with decisive actions.
“First, sever all diplomatic relations, as has already begun among several Arab nations. Second, end all trade dealings with Israel. Third, employ every diplomatic wisdom at our disposal, particularly with countries close to the US, so decisions are made in line with international law, the United Nations, and the demands of universal humanity,” he said.
Anwar emphasised that issues raised at the Extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit were no longer just about Gaza and Palestine, but also other nations targeted by Israel.
His delegation to Qatar included Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Zulkifli Hasan, and senior officials from the Foreign Ministry.
