GENEVA, Sept 6 — The World Health Organisation's (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned of the continued famine in the Gaza Strip on Friday, calling on Israel to halt this catastrophe, the Palestine News and Info Agency (Wafa) reported.

Speaking at a press conference at WHO headquarters in Geneva, he said the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza was entirely preventable and remains within Israel’s ability to bring to an end at any time.

Tedros noted that at least 370 people have died from hunger in Gaza since the start of the Israeli aggression on October 7 2023, including more than 300 deaths recorded in the past two months alone.

He recalled that the United Nations officially declared a state of famine in parts of Gaza on Aug 22, despite Israel’s continued denial of the existence of famine in the Strip.

Tedros stressed that people in Gaza are dying from hunger while life-saving food remains blocked in nearby trucks, unable to reach those in need.

He emphasised that the use of starvation against civilians as a method of warfare constitutes a war crime under international law, warning that the ongoing situation in Gaza risks normalising such practices in future conflicts.
