Form 3 student who fell from hostel sedated to aid recovery

SHAH ALAM, Aug 26 — A Form 3 boy who reportedly fell from the third floor of his Sabak Bernam school hostel is still under sedation to lessen physical and emotional stresses.

Education Ministry (MOE) director-general Mohd Azam Ahmad said the student is under Sungai Buloh Hospital medical professionals’ close watch, with a special briefing given to all parties, including the victim’s next of kin.

“In the briefing, the medical team detailed medical procedures performed. The main focus is to monitor the victim’s head and brain injury,” he said at a special press conference today.

Azam said the temporary reassignment of the school’s administrators to the Selangor State Education Department (JPNS) was done to allow an internal probe.

He added that the move was aimed at preventing emotional distress for the principal, assistant principal for student affairs, and school wardens.

“We have guidelines for school safety including for the hostel and the management of bullying and sexual (harassment) cases, so we will see if the school followed these guidelines.”

Azam emphasised that the MOE fully trusts police to perform comprehensive investigations, including in cases of bullying and altercations.

“This case has become a police case. The ministry fully trusts and is ready to cooperate with police towards a detailed investigation,” he said.

Earlier, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek announced in a statement on Facebook that the school’s senior administrators and wardens have been reassigned to the JPNS until the probe is done.

She said the MOE has launched an internal probe into the incident, where the Form 3 student allegedly fell from the third floor of a school hostel in Sabak Bernam, to find out if the institution adhered to standard operating procedure.
