Phase 2 of Raw Water Security Scheme starts soon

SHAH ALAM, Aug 22 — The state government will launch the second phase of the Raw Water Security Scheme (SJAM) after appointing a consultant for the Selangor Water Masterplan, said State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN) director Dato’ Johary Anuar.

He added that the second phase covers recycling wastewater from municipalities or industries.

“The aim is for the processed water to be used for various purposes and raise the resilience of Selangor’s water sustainability.

“Other directions are to ensure sustainable water management encompassing flood management. If there isn’t enough water we face supply issues, but if we have too much, it floods. This masterplan will account for both aspects, comprehensively,” he said.

On May 13, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the state government is formulating a masterplan to handle issues related to long-term water supply, pollution, and flood mitigation in certain areas.

The masterplan, set to be a guideline to manage water sources, cover the aspects of water storage, catchment pool locations, and long-term flood control systems, is expected to be completed in a year.

Over 100 ponds have been identified statewide for the purpose, and are in the process of being gazetted as strategic storage areas.
