SHAH ALAM, Aug 13 — Prof Emeritus Datuk Hassan Basri has received his letter of appointment as Universiti Selangor's (Unisel) eighth president and vice-chancellor, effective August 18.
He succeeds Senator Prof Emeritus Datuk Mohammad Redzuan Othman, whose term ended on June 30.
The appointment letter was presented to the engineering expert by Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari at the State Secretariat Building today.
Amirudin said Hassan’s appointment aligns with the state’s aspiration to position Unisel as the country’s leading technical and vocational university.
“Dr Hassan’s appointment is a very fitting choice, given his background in TVET. His involvement in science and technology, particularly TVET, is highly significant to the development of this field in Malaysia, and it is hoped he will help further strengthen Unisel,” he told Media Selangor.
Meanwhile, Hassan described the appointment as both a responsibility and a high honour, and expressed his appreciation for the trust placed in him by the state government.
He is confident that Unisel has the potential to become a leading Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) university in line with Selangor's ambitions to strengthen the sector in the future.
“I believe Unisel has great potential to become a TVET university. I will take some time to familiarise myself with its strengths and capabilities, after which we will plan how to move forward,” Hassan said.
The 65-year-old was a former senior lecturer at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia's Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, and served as a Polytechnic Board Member for 15 years.
He specialises in environmental engineering, artificial intelligence, and engineering education, with significant industrial experience from 1983 to 1998.
