PETALING JAYA, June 25 — A government hospital will be built in Petaling Jaya to facilitate access to medical treatment for residents while reducing congestion at existing hospitals, said Petaling Jaya Mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon.
Several locations have been identified for the hospital's construction, and they are now awaiting feedback from the Selangor State Health Department and the Petaling District and Land Office.
“The state government agreed to build another hospital in Petaling Jaya at the end of last year, and the relevant parties are currently considering a suitable site.
“In Petaling Jaya, there are mainly private hospitals, and residents have to travel to Shah Alam or Sungai Buloh, which are the nearest options. With the construction of this hospital, it will help ease the burden, especially for low-income earners,” he said.

Zahri was speaking to the press during a briefing on the draft Petaling Jaya Care Economy Action Plan 2025-2030 and the launch of the PJ Food With Love programme at the Taman Aman Park today.
Previously, the Sultan of Selangor Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj said that high-priority projects in the state, especially hospitals and clinics, must be completed according to the scheduled timeline.
His Royal Highness decreed that the implementing agencies entrusted with the responsibility must monitor the construction closely and address any issues promptly and efficiently.
The Ruler also noted that with the establishment of new healthcare facilities in Selangor, the public will be able to receive quality treatment at affordable and reasonable costs.
Following this, Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari announced that three public hospitals will be built to improve access to healthcare services and reduce congestion at existing hospitals.
He said that the three identified locations are in Sepang, Cyberjaya, and Klang, with the latter aimed at addressing overcrowding at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital (HTAR).
Meanwhile, Zahri said that the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has become the first local authority in the country to introduce the Petaling Jaya Care Economy Action Plan 2025–2030, aimed at strengthening its residents' social wellbeing.
He said the plan was designed as a strategy to establish a more comprehensive community care support system, especially for senior citizens, children, and disabled persons.
“Petaling Jaya is among the earliest cities in Selangor to experience a growing ageing population. Currently, 12.6 per cent of its residents are aged over 65, particularly in areas like Section 17, Section 19, SS3, Taman Medan, and Kampung Tunku.
“Given this trend, MBPJ is taking early steps to implement several programmes under the plan, including the ‘PJ Food With Love’ initiative,” Zahri said.
During the launch, the mayor also handed over emergency alert button devices to senior citizens, donated by AGECOPE Selangor.
He added that the action plan is expected to be finalised in October and aligns with the Selangor Care Economy Policy, which was launched last year.
The policy, launched by Amirudin, was introduced as part of Selangor’s preparation for becoming an ageing state, with 8.1 per cent of its population now aged 65 and above.
The policy focuses on five key pillars:
- Advocacy and promotion.
- Governance and regulation.
- Caregiver and workforce training.
- Investment and partnerships.
- Innovation, technology, and data.
It encompasses care for the elderly, childcare, support for disabled persons, and efforts to strengthen both formal and informal community caregiving systems.
