KLANG, June 5 — It is everyone’s responsibility to care for Sungai Klang, not just the Klang Royal City Council (MBDK), said state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim.
He said river cleanups must involve relevant agencies, non-governmental organisations, and local communities.
“MBDK’s location downstream of Sungai Klang doesn’t guarantee (the river’s) cleanliness. Rivers must be cared for from upstream; from Ampang and such.
“All local authorities involved in river (maintenance) must be proactive in caring for the riverbanks and ecosystem to prevent the dumping of garbage into rivers,” Ng added.

He said this while representing Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari at the launch of the Sungai Klang 2025 mini convention, organised by MBDK, today, adding that the river is one of the Klang Valley’s main water sources that supply millions of people.
Ng said quality river management can contribute to the tourism sector by allowing activities such as river sailing and riverbank parks, in addition to raising property values and creating jobs.
“The conservation of Sungai Klang and its ecosystem is important for environmental wellness, public health, and sustainable development,” he added.
In February, state executive councillor for public health and environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the water in Sungai Klang is safe for use, and could be an alternative source for residents in the future.
She said the Selangor Water Management Authority is intensifying efforts to prevent the pollution of rivers and tributaries in the state.
