Selangor rolls out health programme targeting senior citizens

GOMBAK, May 31 — The Selangor government today launched the Senior Citizens Health Programme as an early measure to detect frailty risks and prevent more critical health complications.

State executive councillor for public health Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the programme will be implemented across nine districts in the state, covering 22 locations, with the aim of providing free health screenings for 3,000 senior citizens.

“Today’s launch serves as a pilot project for the initiative," she told reporters after officiating the programme at Dewan Beringin here today.

"In addition to health screenings, senior citizens in attendance will take part in exercise activities and receive a guidebook on fitness and healthy eating.

“This is part of the state’s intervention initiative to promote the best care practices for the well-being of senior citizens in Selangor."

Also present at the event was Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

Jamaliah said the programme forms part of the RM40 million allocation channelled by the state administration for public healthcare this year.

“The programme is also part of efforts to address issues involving caregivers whose standards are still unsatisfactory, as well as the high cost of care.

“The high cost of caregiving impacts society, particularly young couples who need to care for their ageing parents. It also has economic implications when children are forced to take leave and are unable to work effectively,” she said.
