SHAH ALAM, May 15 — The experience of caring for her father, who suffered from Parkinson’s disease over 14 years ago, drove state executive councillor for women empowerment and social welfare Anfaal Saari to focus specifically on building a care economy in Selangor.

She said the sector not only concentrates on patient treatment but also recognises the role of caregivers, ensuring that they do not feel burdened and have time for themselves.

“My own home became a place to learn the meaning of patience, adaptation, and love in caring for someone who is ill. My father’s illness affected his nerves, causing spasms and making him prone to falls. Over time, it also affected his speech.

“It is not easy, and it requires a lot of patience. My mother took care of my father day and night. So we made sure there was space for her to rest or have some ‘me time’. Sometimes she wants to garden or exercise.

“This is important for caregivers. We made a schedule to ensure everyone contributed. There was a rotation because my mother also needed time for herself,” Anfaal said in a TikTok clip today.

She also emphasised that discussion and cooperation among all family members are crucial as a form of moral support for the caregiver.

Anfaal’s father Saari Sungib was the former Hulu Kelang state assemblyman for three terms (2008 to 2023). At the party level, he held positions including Amanah Selangor deputy chairman and Amanah Gombak head.

In November last year, Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari launched the Selangor Care Economy Policy, which focuses on five main pillars:

  • Advocacy and promotion.
  • Governance and regulation.
  • Trained caregivers and workforce.
  • Investment and cooperation, as well as innovation.
  • Technology and data.

The policy covers care for the elderly, children, and disabled persons, as well as support for both formal and informal caregivers.
