SHAH ALAM, April 20 — The state government is planning procedures to face future disasters, including earthquakes.

State executive councillor for disaster management Mohd Najwan Halimi said his office expects planning to start in June at the latest, by sending officers abroad for training.

“Before this, we focused on managing recurring disasters such as floods and landslides, but recently there was an explosion in Putra Heights.

“We are also learning from the earthquakes that hit Thailand and Myanmar… We saw that countries at no risk of earthquakes previously are now affected due to the changing movements of tectonic plates.

“Disaster management officers will be sent to countries with experience in post-disaster management by June at least,” said Najwan when met at his Aidilfitri open house today.

He added that cleanup in the vicinity of the Putra Heights gas pipeline blast site is ongoing.

“Cleanup at the site is still in progress, just not on the scale we did last week. We cannot operate willy-nilly.

“An early report on the incident will be delivered by Selangor police chief Dato’ Hussein Omar Khan after a meeting next week,” Najwan said.
