Cabinet approves setting up 2027 SEA Games, Para Asean games organising committee

KUALA LUMPUR, March 26 — The Cabinet has approved the establishment of the Organising Committee for the 34th SEA Games and the 15th Asean Para Games scheduled to be held in the country in 2027.

The Youth and Sports Ministry said the meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today also approved the establishment of the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (Masoc) 2027 Secretariat for the implementation of the two major regional sports events.

"The Organising Committee will be chaired by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Hannah Yeoh, and assisted by 16 Sub-Committees that will see the involvement of various ministries, agencies and sports bodies to ensure the comprehensive involvement of all national sports stakeholders.

"The Masoc secretariat, which is responsible for implementing the decisions and directions set by the Organising Committee, will be led by the chief executive officer and chief operating officer, who will be appointed soon," it said in a statement.

Malaysia will return to host the SEA Games, with the last time the biennial games were held in the country in 2017.

For the record, the 2017 edition saw Malaysia finish the campaign as the overall champion after winning 145 gold medals, 92 silver medals, and 86 bronze medals.

Malaysia had hosted seven editions of the championships: in 1965, 1971, 1977, 1989, 2001 and 2017.

For the 33rd edition, which will take place this December, Thailand will be hosting the Games in three locations: Bangkok, Chonburi, and Songkhla.
