SHAH ALAM, Feb 18 — Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj has urged the Selangor government to explore waste-to-energy (WTE) technology as part of its long-term strategy to enhance sustainable waste management and reduce landfill dependence.

The Selangor Ruler said he had received feedback that waste collection and disposal in the state remain pressing issues, prompting calls for more efficient and sustainable solutions.

“The WTE technology should be explored and utilised to convert solid waste into reusable energy sources, thereby reducing environmental pollution and optimising the use of available resources. The state administration must examine and leverage this technology.

“Selangor, as Malaysia’s most developed and densely populated state, generates approximately 7,000 metric tonnes of domestic waste daily.

“With the waste growth rate expected to increase by 3 per cent every two years, strategic measures are crucial to ensuring more sustainable and effective waste management,” he said in his Royal address during the opening of the First Meeting of the Third Term of the 15th Selangor State Assembly at the Annex Building, Shah Alam, today.

His Royal Highness said the Selangor government is also setting up 100 recycling centres in key residential areas across all local authorities as part of its commitment to sustainability.

“This initiative aims to reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfills while fostering a sense of shared responsibility among the public in preserving the environment,” he said.

The Selangor government, through Worldwide Holdings Bhd, is currently developing the state’s first Integrated Solid Waste Management Centre near the Jeram sanitary landfill, which will comprise a WTE plant, composting plant, material recovery facility, anaerobic digester plant, and research and development facility.

The integrated solid waste management system is expected to be ready this year and will handle between 5,000 and 7,000 tonnes of waste daily by 2027.

Meanwhile, the Selangor Ruler also noted the state administration’s efforts to expand green recreational areas with environmentally friendly concepts and recreational facilities across the state through the Taman Rakyat Madani initiative.
