SHAH ALAM, Jan 7 — The state government has formed a task force to augment Selangor's semiconductor industry, making it a central hub for global chip design within the next five years.
State executive councillor for investment, trade, and mobility Ng Sze Han said the Semiconductor Task Force will be strengthened by the expertise of four distinguished semiconductor and investment fund industry leaders.
They include Taiwan's Foxconn consultant Datuk Lai Yit Long, Khazanah Nasional Berhad chief information officer Datuk Hisham Hanidan, BlueChip VC founder and chairman Datuk Seri PY Lai, and The Hive Southeast Asia managing director Datuk Syed Haizam Jamalullail.
"The Semiconductor Task Force will hold at least four meetings annually to synchronise our efforts across all facets of the industry, including supply chain dynamics, talent development, and strategic planning," he said in a statement following the task force's establishment ceremony today.
Its attendees include Selangor Deputy Secretary (Development) and the Selangor State Economic Planning Unit director Dato' Johary Anuar, Selangor Information Technology and Digital Economy Corporation chief executive officer (CEO) Yong Kai Ping, Invest Selangor Berhad CEO Dato' Hasan Azhari, and Permodalan Negeri Selangor Berhad CEO Raja Ahmad Shahrir Iskandar Raja Salim, among others.
Speaking as the task force's chairman, Ng emphasised the strategic importance of this new committee, with the invaluable contributions of the appointed experts due to their extensive backgrounds in pivotal roles within the supply chain that are crucial for propelling Selangor's semiconductor ambitions forward.
He is confident that their collective expertise will significantly streamline the state's initiatives, propelling Selangor towards a leadership position in the semiconductor sector.
Part of the task force's job scope includes developing four Integrated Circuit (IC) design parks over the next five years, aimed at attracting between 25 to 30 leading semiconductor firms, both domestically and internationally.
These efforts are projected to generate approximately RM100 billion in export revenue and RM38 billion in potential income, thus bolstering Malaysia's stance in the global high-tech industry.
Meanwhile, Yong provided an explainer of the human capital development plans, saying that the Advanced Semiconductor Academy of Malaysia is prepared to train up to 2000 IC design engineers and 2000 professionals in packaging engineering.
Similarly, Selangor aims to foster the growth of five to eight unicorn-level IC design companies, further advancing Malaysia's semiconductor industry to new heights.
