SHAH ALAM, Dec 24 — Senior citizen activity centres (PAWEs) will be set up in each of Selangor’s parliamentary constituencies in stages from next year to improve the group’s quality of life.
State executive councillor for women empowerment and welfare Anfaal Saari said the initiative, pursued in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department (JKM) and non-governmental organisations, are among preparations to face an ageing nation due to lengthening life expectancies.
“In Selangor, there are currently 16 PAWEs run by JKM, with a target to set up an activity centre in each parliamentary constituency.
“PAWEs are targeted towards (encouraging) senior citizens (to be) active and productive; boosting their spirituality, such as deepening the Islamic knowledge of those who are Muslim; and encouraging a sense of community,” she said on SelangorTV’s Bual Bicara Skop.

On November 16, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said two PAWEs will be opened in Kuala Langat and Hulu Selangor next year.
He added that the state administration has allocated RM400,000 to upgrade facilities and asset procurement at the Ampang, Paya Jaras, Setia Alam, and Seri Kembangan PAWEs next year.
Amirudin said the step was taken under the state government’s grant to establish PAWEs of universal design that focus on important elements that positively impact the physical, emotional and social needs of local senior citizen communities.
