SEA Games 2027: Facility upgrades to come after organising committee is set up

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 4 — The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) will hold discussions with state governments to coordinate the upgrading of sports facilities and infrastructure for hosting the 2027 SEA Games.

Deputy Minister Adam Adli Abd Halim said the meetings will take place after the setup of the organising committee and secretariat for the event.

“As of now, there is no intention to build new stadiums or sports facilities for the 2027 SEA Games.

“However, the government will upgrade existing sports facilities for use during the 2027 SEA Games, including in Sarawak, following further coordination and discussion,” he said during a question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.

He was responding to a question from Roy Angau Gingkoi (GPS-Lubok Antu) regarding KBS’ plans to improve stadiums and sports facilities, as well as develop an athletes’ village in Sarawak, to ensure the smooth organisation of the 2027 SEA Games in the state.

In response to Roy Angau’s supplementary question on the selection process for athletes to represent the country at the SEA Games and measures to enhance athlete performance for the 2025 and 2027 SEA Games, Adam Adli said athlete selection is done on an ongoing basis in collaboration with the National Sports Council and sports associations.

He added that athletes are selected through various channels, such as the Malaysian Games and competitions organised not only by KBS but also by the Education Ministry and the Malaysian Sports Council.

“What’s most important is ensuring we meet the needs of our athletes, whether they are backup athletes under programmes like Podium and Pelapis or more senior, experienced athletes.

“At the government level, our priority is to provide the necessary infrastructure and ecosystem. Athlete selection, training and development are not solely the responsibility of the ministry and the sports council but also involve sports associations in the country,” he said.
