SHAH ALAM, Nov 15 – The Pulau Indah Power Plant (PIPP) will start operations in the first quarter of 2025 to meet the Klang Valley’s surging power demands, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari announced today.

Speaking during the 2025 Selangor State Budget tabling at the assembly building, Amirudin said the power plant, with its 1,200MW generation capacity, will address the 45 per cent spike in energy consumption across the Klang Valley while supporting Peninsular Malaysia’s larger power requirements.

“PIPP represents a crucial step towards achieving our national commitment to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 45 per cent by 2030,” Amirudin said.

He added that the development has already created over 2,500 jobs for residents and could catalyse regional development.

“Once operational, PIPP will not only power homes and industries but also stimulate local business growth, particularly in Pulau Indah and throughout Selangor,” he said.

Amirudin also revealed the state’s plans to generate 4,090MW of renewable energy by 2034, spearheaded by state subsidiary Worldwide Holdings Bhd (WHB).

WHB’s renewable energy initiatives for 2025 will concentrate on upstream solar and hydro projects across Selangor, including the innovative Projek Payung — a large-scale solar farm collaboration with TNB Renewables Sdn Bhd, a Tenaga Nasional Bhd subsidiary.

The development will be executed in four distinct packages, creating varied employment opportunities throughout the project lifecycle.

Amirudin said in a significant move to expand its renewables portfolio, WHB has submitted a bid for the fifth round of the Energy Transition and Natural Resources Ministry’s Large Scale Solar programme, which exceeds 500 MWp in capacity.

Similarly, the Selangor administration has approved the development of two Integrated Solid Waste Management Centres with waste-to-energy facilities in Jeram and Tanjung Dua Belas, slated for completion in 2025 and 2027, respectively.

WHB also leads these projects and will create over 2,000 jobs for its construction, said Amirudin.
