KLANG, Nov 13 — Selangor has identified 354 areas at risk of floods, with the most in Klang, said state executive councillor for disaster management Mohd Najwan Halimi.

He said Klang was followed by Hulu Langat (55 areas), Petaling (52), Kuala Selangor (43), Sepang (42), Gombak (35), Kuala Langat (27), Hulu Selangor (12), and Sabak Bernam (11).

“We have identified areas at risk of floods based on several factors. So far, these areas have not been inundated, but gazetted as risky areas that need mitigation works.

“For areas identified as flood hotspots, 79 locations have been earmarked, and the state government is implementing mitigation works to prevent recurrent incidents,” he said after a visit to the site of a flash flood in Taman Mutiara Bukit Raja 2 here today.

Najwan said the state government is prepared to face any disaster, with its existing capacity and abilities.

“We are prepared with (plans) involving disaster management units, district offices and local authorities.

“The community must be aware of announcements and information, especially residents in flood hotspots. Cooperate if you are asked to evacuate due to flooding or heavy rain,” he urged.

The Meteorological Department has said the northeast monsoon will last until March 2025, with four to six episodes of continuous heavy downpours throughout the period.

In preparation, the state government has held disaster simulations involving various agencies ahead of the monsoon.

Yesterday, flash floods hit five areas in Klang after continuous heavy rain. The locations are Bandar Bukit Raja, Kampung Batu Belah, Rantau Panjang, Meru, and Padang Jawa.
