SHAH ALAM, Oct 21 — A retention pond will be built in the Sungai Chinchin area following incidents of flash floods resulting from the ongoing construction of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL).
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said he has also instructed the relevant authorities to assist in the temporary relocation of 21 houses located in low-lying areas that are at risk of being inundated during the construction period.
“They will move to rental homes and the costs involved will be covered by the Malaysia Rail Link (MRL),” he said in a Facebook post today.
Amirudin said these decisions were made during a special meeting he convened with MRL, the Selayang Municipal Council, Gombak District officers, Sungai Chinchin resident representatives and other relevant parties to discuss issues related to the ECRL construction near Sungai Chinchin.
He acknowledged that the ongoing works have raised several concerns and affected the residents of Sungai Chinchin and Gombak Utara.
“Among the main issues are the increasing frequency of flash floods, noise pollution, air and dust pollution, and burst pipe incidents.”
According to Amirudin, the MRL has agreed to bear the cost of repairing damages to homes and roads caused by material explosions.
The MRL has also committed to suspending work in the area on Sundays and other designated days, such as exam periods.
“God willing, the Gombak parliamentary office will cooperate with all stakeholders, including residents and MRL, to ensure the ECRL construction progresses smoothly while prioritising the community’s well-being.”
Previously, several Sungai Chinchin residents have expressed concerns over the ECRL construction in the area, including fears of being evicted.
Amirudin had, however, said the state government is following proper procedures in managing the project.
