SHAH ALAM, Oct 15 — The state government has allocated RM5 million for the maintenance of  unmanned ditches and drains across Selangor in preparation for the northeast monsoon season.

State executive councillor for infrastructure Izham Hashim said the drainage cleaning works covering over 300km will be conducted in two phases, with each phase receiving an allocation of RM2.5 million.

"Phase one will begin this week, while phase two is expected to commence in the first week of November to prepare for the monsoon.

"In the long term, the management of these drains will be handed over to either the Irrigation and Drainage Department, the local authority or the district office,” he said.

He said this in a recent press conference on flood mitigation coordination at the state administration building, here.

Previously, the Meteorological Department forecast that the northeast monsoon would start from November to March 2025, with four to six episodes of continuous heavy rain expected during this period.

Selangor is also expected to experience king tide on October 18, with sea levels projected to reach 5.8m.
