Sukma 2026: Selangor confirms participation in 28 events, wants more medals

SHAH ALAM, Oct 12 — Selangor has confirmed its participation in 28 core events at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2026, which will be held in the state.

State executive councillor for sports Mohd Najwan Halimi said as the host for the 22nd edition, Selangor aims to increase its medal tally through various other sports events.

He added that his committee had conducted a post-evaluation of the Sukma 2024 in Sarawak in collaboration with the Selangor State Sports Council involving the management and associations to identify strengths and weaknesses.

“This will serve as a strategy and preparation for athletes facing the next Sukma. There is much to improve, as some sports with less potential have still managed to bring home medals, even if they weren’t gold.

“These are the athletes we need to refine to achieve greater success at Sukma 2026. So far, 28 high-performance sports will be contested, in addition to reviewing several others,” he said.

Najwan said this at the launch of the state-level National Sports Day (HSN) 2024 at Dataran Kemerdekaan here today, which was attended by over 2,000 people.

He also presented certificates to the Selangor Red Giants (SRG) team, which emerged as champions of the Mobile Legends Bang Bang (MLBB) Mid Season Cup in Saudi Arabia last July, recognising them as the HSN Selangor 2024 Icon.

The 21st SUKMA took place in Sarawak from August 17 to 24, where Selangor secured third place with a total of 56 gold, 64 silver, and 61 bronze medals.

Najwan said the state government welcomed the call from Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh for states to invest in sports and collaborate with the ministry.

“Selangor is indeed responsible for restoring the state as a premier destination for hosting both international and national sports events.

“For example, we previously hosted the Asian Team Badminton Championship, and we also offered to be the host for Sukma 2026,” he said.
