KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 3 — A disaster simulation and practical exercise involving various Selangor agencies will be held next week ahead of the northeast monsoon, set to begin next month.

State executive councillor for disaster management Mohd Najwan Halimi said the annual exercise in Pulau Meranti, Puchong, aims to ensure more organised and effective communication management when facing disasters.

“Yesterday, we held a state disaster coordination meeting involving all relevant agencies, including authorities, for updates and preparations.

“Next week, we have a disaster simulation exercise in Pulau Meranti with all these agencies. There, we will test all our assets to ensure they are functioning properly,” he said after the launch of the International Rekatone Design Excellence Awards at the Pavilion Embassy Service Suites here today.

Najwan said over 1,000 temporary evacuation centres (PPS) throughout the state are on standby in case of disasters.

He added that all agencies, including the District and Land Office, are collaborating with the Social Welfare Department to ensure efforts run smoothly.

“If there’s a need to open a PPS, we will implement it immediately. We have more than 1,000 PPS on high alert if any undesirable disasters occur,” he said.

The Meteorological Department previously said the northeast monsoon is expected from next month until March next year, with four to six episodes of continuous heavy rain forecast in this period.

Yesterday, Selangor Journal reported the state will face the high-tide phenomenon on October 18, with an expected sea level reading of 5.8m.
