SHAH ALAM — The Merdeka spirit existent in Selangor is a key cog that will ensure the continued success of the state, and Malaysia in general, including through the implementation of policies that benefit the public.
Speaking at the state-level 67th National Day celebration, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari commended the spirit of independence among the people of Selangor, whom he described as being committed to living in harmony and peace with people of various backgrounds.
“Selangor residents understand that diversity is a strength because it is a natural condition from which we gain lessons and knowledge, learning from each other's strengths and weaknesses,” he said at the Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam, here, last night.
“A Merdeka spirit also realises that for Selangor and Malaysia to rise to a higher level of excellence, rule and order must be upheld. Being independent means offering perspectives and criticisms, but it does not mean having the freedom to incite chaos, deceit or sedition.”
Amirudin said at a time when some sought to sow division for political gain, the people of Selangor understood that diversity is not an excuse to weaken the long-standing unity among residents.
The Menteri Besar said the state administration is also committed to upholding Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj’s decree for all citizens to steer clear of actions motivated by envy, slander or any intent to divide the people.
“I respectfully support His Royal Highness’ wish for the people to play their part in making Malaysia a competitive, progressive and prosperous nation.”

In this regard, Amirudin urged all to always uphold the Federal Constitution, defend the role of Islam and other religions, respect the special position of Malays and indigenous peoples, strengthen the constitutional monarchy, promote Malay as a regional language while safeguarding other ethnic languages, and ensure fair Federal-state relations.
“The people of Selangor understand our collective responsibility to contribute to the advancement of the state's economy. Failure is not an option, as the success of our nation is closely intertwined with Selangor's economic achievements.”
Stop sowing division
Amirudin also hit out at those constantly exploiting sensitive issues for their own benefit, threatening the nation’s unity and harmony.
“Some are unable to move on from the schemes they previously orchestrated. Like quicksand, their feelings of jealousy and inability to accept and be content continuously pull them down, causing their political actions to become chaotic and neglectful of national interests.
“As a result, even after 67 years of independence, we still face racial provocations and incitements that question the credibility of national institutions, including the Malay royalty.

Amirudin said while winning and losing in politics is commonplace, the difficulty some have in moving on after failing to form the government reminded him of the character Raja Kechil, who claimed to be the son of Sultan Mahmud II Marhum Mangkat DiJulang and threatened national harmony out of a desire for power.
He said these individuals, having seemingly lost their sense of dignity, were also the ones who shamelessly labelled others as traitors and betrayers when their actions betrayed the true meaning of Independence.
“However, voices of extremism, hatred and intolerance will not be able to overshadow the spirit of freedom, moderation and openness.
“The chaos caused by these extremists and irresponsible groups calls for a renewed reflection on the true meaning of independence and the essence of our struggle.”
