SHAH ALAM, Aug 13 — The state government has set aside RM35,000 for the Wanita Berdaya Selangor (WBS) scholarship programme, intended for individuals pursuing doctorates in gender studies.

State executive councillor for women empowerment and welfare Anfaal Saari said the offer is valid until August 31 for Malaysian citizens aged 21 to 45 and Women’s Leadership Academy alumni aged 21 to 55.

She said there must be 10 applications that qualify for the interview stage so the program has its one sponsorship slot filled.

“Pursuing doctoral studies in gender studies not only expands professional opportunities but empowers individuals to become agents of change, positively impacting society.

“PhD graduates in gender studies can work in academia, research, social work, policy consulting, non-governmental organisations, and the public and private sectors.

“Expertise in gender issues is becoming more valuable across various industries that require a deep understanding of equality and social justice issues,” she told Selangorkini.

Anfaal said the course meets the current needs and is important for the growth of the nation and the state, particularly to implement the Selangor Women’s Policy.

“It is also closely related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations.

“Gender studies helps in understanding, analysing, and addressing issues related to gender inequality, human rights, and social justice, which are key elements in achieving the SDGs.

“Thus, this course is crucial for supporting and advancing many SDGs. Through gender studies, students and professionals can develop inclusive and effective solutions to achieve gender equality and social justice, which are fundamental to sustainable development,” she said.

This initiative is part of the state government’s efforts to execute the Lifelong Learning Programme, with WBS serving as the implementing agency.
