SHAH ALAM, Aug 9 — State executive councillor for Islamic affairs and innovation Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah has condemned the attack on a student and a religious teacher in Kelana Jaya this afternoon.
Speaking as Seri Setia's state assemblyman and a member of the Selangor Islamic Religious Council, he has requested police assistance in urgently hunting down the perpetrator responsible for such an act, and to maximise all possible legal actions that can be taken if found guilty.
"Places of worship and schools must be safe spaces for every citizen. Such disrespectful and intimidating actions deserve to be met with an immediate, strong, and firm response by all relevant authorities," he said in a statement this evening.
Dr Fahmi also hopes the public, who may have any information, will promptly report to the police.
I pray that the victims are granted swift recovery and good health and that the police swiftly apprehends this disrespectful criminal," he said.
The attack occurred at Surau Al-Ehsaniah Ahmadiah, along Jalan SS 5A/10 in Kelana Jaya, at 1.30pm.
Harian Metro reported witnesses as saying two women in their 20s and 50s were
stabbed and slapped by a knife-wielding man, who managed to escape by driving an Audi car.
One witness, religious teacher Salwiah Yusof, 37, said they were preparing for the afternoon studies session as the men headed for their Friday prayers when the victim in her 20s was attacked by the perpetrator as she entered the toilet.
"Hearing a woman's scream, the headmistress and other women nearby went to check what happened. We saw as she struggled against the man, with wounds believed to have been caused by stabs.
"An ustazah attempted to aid the woman, but ended up with hand injuries," she was quoted as saying.
This is the first time an attack has occurred at the surau since it was established in 1987.
