State launches e-waste collection plan to incentivise participants

SHAH ALAM, July 11 — The state government today rolled out a user-friendly e-waste collection initiative that offers cashback to participants.

The Selangor E-Waste Collection Programme, in collaboration with certified e-waste collectors, ERTH and Maxis Bhd, provides door-to-door collection services for users interested in disposing of their old electronic devices.

State executive councillor for public health and environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said those who take part will receive RM5 in cash and an additional RM5 rebate if they use the promotional code “SELANGOR”.

“The Selangor government introduced this user-friendly initiative to encourage citizens to adopt a sustainable lifestyle by way of responsible and environmentally-friendly disposal of e-waste.

“This initiative aims to educate the public and raise awareness about the importance of properly managing and disposing of e-waste,” she said in her speech at the launch at the State Secretariat building here today.

The e-waste collection service is free with a minimum of five units, subject to terms and conditions.

Anfaal said a pilot project for the initiative will be implemented until December 31, with the aim of collecting 15,000 e-waste items.

She said the initiative will be expanded in the future, with engagement sessions underway between the state government and other parties such as supermarkets, fuel stations and other business premises.

Speaking to reporters later, Jamaliah said e-waste bins were previously provided across the state to promote proper disposal, but they were misused by unscrupulous individuals.

She said various unrelated items like liquid products were found in the bins.

“As we know, electronic items are very sensitive, so we can’t recycle or resell them once they are damaged,” she said.

The public can visit the website to apply for the service. A representative from ERTH will contact users via WhatsApp to make further arrangements.
