SHAH ALAM, July 9 — The small hydropower plant in Sungai Batang Kali, Hulu Selangor is expected to be completed in the first quarter of next year, a year ahead of schedule.

State executive councillor for infrastructure Izham Hashim said once ready, the power station will provide better electricity stability, benefitting residents in nearby areas.

It is being developed by Worldwide Hydro Energy Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Renewable Power Sdn Bhd.

“The project has achieved 69 per cent work progress and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of next year.

“Upon completion, this power station will supply 5.1 megawatts to the Ulu Yam main intake substation and will strengthen the stability of the local electricity supply,” he said in a recent Facebook post.

Izham also congratulated the project team for their hard work in ensuring smooth progress despite facing several challenges.

He said this after visiting the project site to get an update on the development.

Selangor has been exploring larger usage of renewable energy in recent years.

In November last year, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the state is poised to contribute a massive 1 to 1.5 gigawatts (GW) in renewable energy to power up the country’s electricity within the next couple of years.

He also noted that Selangor, through its subsidiary Worldwide Holdings Bhd, is involved in 10 pilot projects worth RM10 billion, many of which are focused on green technology.

These projects span across various sustainable energy sources, including solar power, mini-hydro plants, and hydrogen production.
