SHAH ALAM, May 31 — Google's announcement of a RM9.4 billion investment in Malaysia, which includes the development of a data centre and Google Cloud region in Selangor, is expected to have a significant economic impact on the state.
State executive councillor for investment, trade, and mobility Ng Sze Han said various industries in Selangor, including semiconductors, are set to benefit from this development.
“Google's RM9.4 billion investment in Selangor to develop a data centre and Google Cloud region is anticipated to have a substantial multiplier effect on various industries, including the semiconductor industry.

“This is because the development heavily relies on advanced semiconductor technology, thereby stimulating growth and innovation within the semiconductor industry.
“This significant investment also reflects investors’ confidence in Selangor's development potential,” he said in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter) today.
Ng added that Google's investment, along with the development of the Integrated Circuit (IC) Design Park in Puchong, will further enhance Selangor's attractiveness as a hub for high-skilled tech job opportunities. In turn, this will subsequently increase the state’s talent pool.
Yesterday, Google announced that it will invest US$2 billion (RM9.4 billion) in Malaysia, the group’s largest planned investment in the country to date.
The tech giant said its investment is projected to have over US$3.2 billion (RM15.04 billion) in positive economic impact and create 26,500 job opportunities by 2030.
According to Google, the data centre will power its popular digital services, such as Search, Maps and Workspace, which billions of people and organisations use worldwide.
Once operational, Malaysia will join 11 other countries where Google has built and operated data centres that serve users globally.
Regarding the Google Cloud region, the company said it would deliver high-performance and low-latency services to large enterprises, startups, and public sector organisations.
Google Cloud customers in Malaysia will benefit from key controls that allow them to maintain the highest security, data residency, and compliance standards, including specific data storage requirements.
"The cloud region will be complemented by Google Cloud’s existing Dedicated Cloud Interconnect locations in Cyberjaya and Kuala Lumpur, which provide direct connections between an organisation’s on-premises network and Google Cloud’s global network," it said in a statement yesterday.
