Ministry suggests August 14 as National Unity Calligraphy Day

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 20 — The National Unity Ministry has proposed that National Unity Calligraphy Day be observed annually on August 14, in conjunction with the World Calligraphy Day.

Its minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said nationwide celebrations should be held to enable people of all races, ethnicities, and religions to appreciate the art of calligraphy.

“It is time to support the art of calligraphy as a unity builder in order to strengthen relationships, togetherness and harmony among Malaysians,” he said in a statement today after opening the National Huichun Calligraphy Conference 2024.

The ministry will consider organising the Unity Calligraphy Festival, which will feature Jawi, Chinese, and Tamil scripts, to foster unity in diversity.

“May such programmes stand as milestones in the successful efforts to preserve and promote Huichun calligraphy as another valuable heritage of the country,” Aaron said.

On the conference, he said it demonstrated the ministry’s commitment to promoting the country’s cultural heritage through the 'Ini Warisan Kita' (This is Our Heritage) initiative.

“Huichun calligraphy reflects Malaysia’s unique cultural diversity. It is not just a form of visual writing but an artistic expression that represents the history, diversity and beauty of Malaysia,” Aaron said.
