Meru rep hopes for more flood, welfare allocations in state budget

SHAH ALAM, Nov 2 — Meru state assemblyman Mariam Abdul Rashid is confident the state government will provide higher allocations in the 2024 Selangor Budget to address flooding issues.

She said several drains and ditches, the causes of floods in the area, are currently undergoing maintenance as an immediate step to address the monsoon transition.

"The construction of four retention ponds, a long-term effort to address the floods, will commence early next year with an expected implementation period of two years.

"Certainly, the funds received will be utilised to the fullest as the people want change not only in the economy but also in Meru's infrastructure, especially the flood issue which needs to be addressed promptly," Mariam said.

She also hopes the budget will focus more on the people's welfare, as nearly half of her constituents are from the B40 low-income group.

"I hope more funds will be allocated for us to collectively assist those in need, including reducing the disabled community's burdens," Mariam said.

The 2024 Selangor Budget will be presented on November 10 by the Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari, at the State Legislative Assembly.

For the 2023 state budget, RM2.45 billion was approved, with RM1.25 billion for management expenditure and RM1.2 billion for development expenditure.
