SHAH ALAM, Sept 4 — Works are underway to convert the world's largest dredgers into a tin mining museum in Dengkil, with its doors expected to be open to the public some time next year.
State executive councillor for culture Borhan Aman Shah said upon its completion, the attraction will further boost tourism in Selangor.
This, he said, will be aided by the fact that the museum will be strategically located close to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
"Repair works are being done to the dredger. It is in fact the largest and only one in the world," he told Selangorkini, adding that the restoration of the boat is one part of the state government's efforts to boost the local tourism industry.
"In addition, we have sought funding from the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (for the works). The cooperation of all quarters is critical in realising (the conversion of the dredger into a museum)."
In June last year, the state government successfully acquired one of the largest dredgers in the world through the Sepang Municipal Council.
It was previously reported that the machine, which weighs over 6,000 tonnes, will be turned into a historic museum by next year.
Meanwhile, Borhan said the arts and culture sector is vital in contributing to the economic growth of Malaysia and Selangor.
"The state governments and local artists ought to work together (to boost the economy)," he said.
Borhan added that apart from promoting historic locations, beaches and parks, Selangor also intends to boost arts and culture tourism, both domestically and globally.
