New Selangor speaker appointment after Malaysia Day — Amirudin

SHAH ALAM, Aug 22 — The new Selangor speaker will be announced after Malaysia Day, coinciding with the first sitting of the new assembly.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the appointment may also take place during a special session prior to the main sitting.

“This procedure will be carried out after Malaysia Day, as that’s when the state assembly is scheduled to convene,” he said at a press conference after his inaugural address to Selangor civil servants at the state administration headquarters today, following his reappointment to office.

However, Amirudin did not reveal any names for the position of speaker.

It was earlier reported that DAP proposed former Banting assemblyman, Lau Weng San, for the position.

This is after the party agreed to allow Barisan Nasional to contest its Dusun Tua seat, which the latter won.

Sekinchan assemblyman Ng Suee Lim, who served as state speaker last term, resigned from the position and is now an executive councillor.

Amirudin said new executive councillors will be appointed from all segments of society and not just political parties.

“We will compile a list of names of village heads and non-governmental organisation representatives who will be appointed to these posts.

“Local councillors’ terms are expected to end this year. We will compile the list in October and by December, we will know who will be appointed to these positions,’’ he said.
