GOMBAK, July 25 — The Puchong Brothers team has won the Piala Harapan championship for the kabaddi sports competition at the Sungai Tua state constituency on Sunday (July 23).
The prize includes RM500 in cash and medals after they went up against seven other teams.
The Kampung Pandan and BL Academy teams secured second and third place, respectively, receiving RM300 and RM200 in cash and medals.
The competition’s organiser K M Puventhiran said kabaddi has the potential to be elevated to a higher level with more participation, especially among youths from the Indian community.
“kabaddi indirectly instils discipline and teamwork among individuals involved in the sport. I hope to see more sports activities organised, especially for youths. I believe active participation in sports will reduce the risk of getting involved in crime,” he said.
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari presented the victors with their prizes during the ceremony held at Dewan Rakyat Padang Awam in Batu Caves.
As the incumbent Sungai Tua state assemblyman, Amirudin also officiated the Sihat Wanita Pound Fitness programme.
Its organiser Siti Norhayati Radikun expressed delight at the overwhelming response, with over 200 participants, thus exceeding their target.
“Our purpose for the programme is to encourage women to be active and maintain good physical stamina in preparation for the upcoming Selangor state election,” said the PKR Sungai Tua Women’s Wing deputy chief.
